If the rankings don’t translate into traffic that is converting on your website, then they aren’t worth anything. Even then, don’t believe the hype. We actually do NOT view the first page as the end game. That’s both child’s play and statistically irrelevant.
Instead, the data shows that you need to be at least in the top 5 for meaningful traffic.
If you’re like most searchers, you prefer clicking on organic results as opposed to clicking on paid ads. The stats support this common sense behavior as well. Studies show that “71.33% of searches resulted in a page 1 Google organic click. Page two and three only get 5.59% of clicks.”
What’s left for paid ad clicks? A measly 23% of all traffic goes to Google Paid Ads.
Not only does SEO get you get MORE traffic, you also get better QUALITY traffic because you now have the additional benefit of being “ranked” in a top position as opposed to “paying” for your spot. Just like you do, searchers trust the organic rankings more than paid advertisers which makes SEO traffic that much easier to convert to a lead or sale.
Does it matter where I am on Page 1?
You already know the answer to this, but it’s nice to see the data support it too. How often do you go past the top 3, or even the top 5 results when you are searching? The data says:

As you can see, you really need to be in the top 5 at least for any kind of meaningful organic traffic…
